Twitching of eye

I always heard that left eye twitching is bad and right eye twitching is good. From our childhood, we are listing these facts. But actually, it all happens because of allergies, tiredness, and maybe because of stress.

Peepal tree at night

I always heard that never go near a peepal tree at night because people believe ghost lives in that tree and they can harm us. But there is nothing like, this is just a fear of our minds nothing else.

All trees absorb carbon dioxide, change it into energy and give out oxygen in the air which helps us to breathe but at night this process gives an opposite reaction.

At night, plants exhale carbon dioxide because there is a lack of sunlight. But let’s think about animals who sleep under trees all night then why don’t we see all of them dead next morning?

Itching in hand

Itching in hands means money is coming in your way whenever I ask my mother that my hand is twitching she answered that either you will get money or you will slap someone but nothing ever happened like this lol. So this all happens because of allergies, dry skin, skin damage in your hands.

Black Cat crossing your way

It is a very common superstition not only in Indian society but also in the old western culture also. It is believed that if you are going out of your home for any work and a black colored cat is crossing your way, you should stop for a while or return for a while and drink water by letting the other people go first.

The origin of this belief might be from the Old Egyptian Society in which the black Cat was always considered as
witched with the foul spirits and evils.

As in ancient times, people had to travel across the forests using muddy ways. There was a possibility of a cat being chased by some wild animals which might even attack the humans. Just to avoid such dangers this became customary that if a cat crosses your way, you must stop.

Breaking of Mirror a Bad Omen

Breaking the mirror is considered good or bad in different cultures. Some people think if a mirror breaks it will give a piece of good news and some people say if it breaks it will bring bad luck while it can just be a coincident nothing much.
The people of Rome started saying that it will bring bad luck for 7 years, Seven years because they believed it takes seven years to renew itself.

Do Not Sweep after sunset

My mother always scolds me for sweeping in the night, actually, according to them, Laxmi Mata will return from our house. Goddess Lakshmi will walk out of your house if you sweep your place after sunset. In a country, where we pray to goddess Lakshmi so that she bestows wealth on us. Why sunset?

This is because, it is believed that the goddess generally pays a visit after sunset so, if you sweep your place after sunset, she won’t come in.

But according to the theory sweeping in the night is not allowed so we can’t sweep our expensive thing, money, jewelry.

Sneezing & Calling someone from the back

If someone is going outside then if someone sneezes its mark as a bad thing. It is also believed that sneezing once is bad and you should wait for the second sneeze before going outside. We are not allowed to interrupt someone if someone is going outside because it marks as bad omen.

Hiccups

It is said that if you are felling hiccups means someone is missing you. But hiccups occur because of the disturbance to the nerve pathways from the brain to the muscles involved, this occurs due to temperature changes or emotional changes.

Girls are not allowed to visit temples and not allowed to enter in the kitchen during the periods.

In 1896 the first sanitary pad was invented, while painkillers were not available before the 20th century. In India, there are so many places still do not have access to either.
So the logic here was that before we had access to both, these 5 days were extremely painful and stressful for women and it was all about giving them rest. Probably women did not work during those days because of discomfort, which slowly became a ritual and was later on degraded to the form of superstition.

Cast off en Evil Eye

It is common in India to put a mark of Kajal (black sool) on the child’s forehead. This is to avoid the evil eye on the child.
Similarly, mothers do it by hovering sandals seven times on the child and thumping it on the ground.

Keeping Knife and Onion in the Bed

In India, If someone is getting married then their parents tell them to keep a knife and Chilies on the Bed.
In the same way, if a person dies the bereaved told to keep these articles with them.
This way you ward off the evil spirits away and continue dreaming.

Don’t wash clothes or hair on Thursday

Again the superstition on days, there is nothing like this. You may wash your clothes whenever you want. People believe this superstition is made for saving the water.

The mourning family of a dead person should not cook food until shraddha

Giving them time to cope and rest, The reason behind this to help the family to get recover from the situation so they can take rest.

Bathe after attending a funeral ceremony – Preventing infection

It has nothing to do with the departed soul, it is reasoning which came much later. The logic here is that since our ancestors did not have a vaccination for many diseases earlier, and that includes hepatitis, smallpox and other deadly and contagious diseases, it was best to come home and have a thorough bath.

The place where so many people visit, not to sound cold but a dead body is left exposed, you never know what infections might be lurking around, therefore, the logic.
